Rogowski Coil Current Sensor

Application:

Flexible Rogowski Coil Current Sensor The Rogowski coil is an electrical sensor suitable for measuring alternating current (AC) and/ or fluctuating DC current pulses. The sensor operates on the principal that a voltage is induced in a coil whose plane is perpendicular to the conductor carrying the electrical current and perpendicular to the magnetic flux. The induced voltage is proportional to the rate of change of the current in the conductor. Integrating the resulting voltage signal provides a measurement of the current in the conductor. An explanation of the Rogowski Coil principle can be found in Wikipedia – Rogowski Coil

Incorporated into products used for electric power measurement, electric power quality monitoring, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), protective relays. The Rogowski Coil current sensor is used in applications where it is necessary that the sensor be capable of responding to a wide operating current range, a wide frequency range and/ or is exposed to harsh operating conditions.

Advantages:

  • Low inductance enables the sensor to respond to fast-changing currents.
  • Highly linear output when subjected to large currents changes (no magnetic core to saturate).
  • Largely immune to electromagnetic interference with equally spaced windings.

Rogowski Coil Current Sensor Features:

  • Frequency range: 0 to 100 kHZ
  • Accuracy: ±0.2% to ±2.0%
  • Linearity: ±0.1% to ±0.5%
  • Time response: 0.1 µ sec
  • Measurement range: 1A to 6,000A

Mini Split Rogowski Coil Loop – Featuring a mini split loop configuration which permits the mounting of the current sensor on the primary conductor without taking the primary conductor offline and disconnecting for installation.

Flexible Split Rogowski Coil Models – Featuring a split configuration which permits the mounting of the current sensor on the primary conductor without taking the primary conductor offline and disconnecting for installation.

Flexible Split Rogowski Coil with Voltage Integrator – The JRF models configured with a voltage integrator (integrating the dv/ dt signal) providing a proportional voltage output to the primary conductor current.

Fix Mounted Rogowski Coil Models – Intended for applications where the current sensor is mounted in a fixed position. The installation requires the taking of the primary conductor offline and disconnecting for installation. Available in toroidal or oblong configuration suitable for BUS bars.

Custom Rogowski Coil current sensor designs can be designed and manufactured to meet the specific application requirements. For a no obligation technical evaluation, please provide the specific performance requirements to Application Engineering @ TIChenAssociates.
